The 1,000 most common Dutch words, with English meanings

The 1,000 words Dutch speakers use most, in order, each with its English meaning and every noun with de or het. The first 100 make up more than half of all the words in everyday Dutch. Read them here, print them, or import them into Anki.

How to learn these words

Learn them in order, a few a day, and not on their own. The first hundred are mostly small words like de, van, zijn and er, which only make sense in a sentence, so learn those from the texts you read. Further down, the list fills up with nouns and verbs, and those you can learn from the list.

  • Learn every noun with de or het. The article is part of the word: de dag, het huis. The list gives it every time, and the page on de and het has the patterns that help.
  • Say the word in a sentence. Ik ga naar huis stays with you longer than gaan, to go. The 100 basic phrases for daily life are a good place to start.
  • Repeat on a schedule. Import the Anki deck: Dutch on the front of each card, English on the back, and Anki brings each word back just before you would forget it.
  • Read at your level. Every A2 text on this site is written so that at least 9 in 10 of its words are among the 2,000 most common Dutch words or the everyday words further down this page. Start with the free A2 texts.

Words 1 to 100: more than half of all Dutch

These hundred words make up 55 percent of all the words in everyday Dutch: in a text of 300 words, about 165 come from this list. Most of them are small words: articles, pronouns, prepositions and the verbs zijn, hebben, worden and gaan.

Words 1 to 100, most common first. Nouns are shown with de or het.

Words 501 to 1,000

Words 501 to 1,000, most common first. Nouns are shown with de or het.

Everyday words by topic

A frequency list has one blind spot: the words of a learner’s first weeks. Dutch speakers write and say de kaas, de fiets, de dokter and twaalf less often than het probleem or de regering, so those words are not even in the 1,000. Here are 258 everyday words by topic: numbers, days and months, colors, family, the body, food, the house, clothes, the weather, the town, money, greetings and things. 96 of them are also in the 1,000 above.

Where the list comes from

The ranking comes from wordfreq, a free frequency list by Robyn Speer that counts Dutch in Wikipedia, film and TV subtitles, news, websites and social media. A frequency list counts word forms, like loopt, liep and gelopen, so the forms were grouped into words, like lopen, with UD Dutch Alpino, a collection of Dutch sentences annotated by hand, which also gave the word class and de or het. Names, brands, abbreviations, English words and a few vulgar words are left out. The English meanings are ours, and every line was checked in a separate review.

You may share and adapt the list, also for your classes, under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license: credit wordfreq (Robyn Speer) and Dutch Readers, and share your version under the same license.

What are the most common Dutch words?

The ten most common are de, het, van, zijn, een, en, in, op, ik and dat: the, of, to be, a, and, in, on, I and that. Together they make up about a quarter of all the words in everyday Dutch.

How many Dutch words do I need to know?

The first 1,000 cover about three in four of the words you meet in everyday Dutch. The 2,000 most common words together with the everyday words cover at least nine in ten of the words in every A2 text on this site, so 1,000 is a good first goal and 2,000 the next.

Should I learn de or het with every noun?

Yes. The article is part of the word, and it changes the words around it: de grote stad, het grote huis, but een groot huis. About seven in ten nouns take de. The page on de and het has the patterns and 200 common het-words.

Can I use this list in my lessons?

Yes. The list is free under CC BY-SA 4.0: print it, copy it into your own materials, change it. Credit wordfreq (Robyn Speer) and Dutch Readers, and share your version under the same license.

How do I put the list into Anki?

Download the Anki file, then in Anki on your computer choose File, then Import, and pick the file. It makes a deck with 1,000 cards, Dutch on the front and English on the back. Sync it to see the deck on your phone.
