How the audio works

Each book has one audio page with a player per chapter. The QR code printed at the start of every chapter opens that page. The player has three speeds (0.75, 0.9 and 1.0) and remembers where you stopped, so you can listen to chapter 2 on the tram and finish it at home. The files play in any browser, on a phone or a laptop, without an account.

The recordings are made for learners: a clear voice, a little slower than conversation, a short pause at every full stop. Nothing is cut: every word on the page is in the audio, including the chapter headings, so you can follow with your finger.

How to use audio at A2

  1. First reading: read the chapter alone, without the audio. Tap or look up the underlined words.
  2. Second reading: play the audio and read along. Do not stop the player; if you lose your place, let it run and find the next paragraph.
  3. Listen once without the text, the next day. You will understand more than you expect, because you know the story.
  4. Say it with the voice: pick one paragraph and read it aloud at the same time as the recording, three times. This is the fastest way to get the rhythm of Dutch into your mouth.

Speed tips

  • Start at 0.9. It sounds slow for a day and natural after a week.
  • Use 0.75 for a new chapter, or for a paragraph where you lose the thread.
  • Switch to 1.0 a month before a listening exam. The Luisteren A2 exam plays at normal speed.
  • Do not slow the audio down to understand every word. Slow it down to hear the sounds; understanding comes from reading.

The free texts have audio too

Every free text on the reading pages has the same player, with the same speeds. If you do not have a book yet, start there: the texts are shorter, and the method is the same.
